WIP: Skaventide Scenery

Getting to grips with my first scenery paint job…

WIP: Skaventide Scenery

Here’s a confession. I’ve never painted scenery before. We’ve been working our way through the Skaventide box, getting ready to play some games of Spearhead. So far, I’ve concentrated on the Skaven, but a few videos gave me the confidence t9 have a go at the scenery pieces.

Should I start with the two small ones.

Nah. Let’s go big.

However, that meant a lot of clipping, scraping, filing and gluing, befor3 I was finally happy with the pieces. They’re of a different plastic to the rest of the box, and feel less carefully cast. Loads of mould lines to deal with. But, I got there, and one quick prime in the back garden, I was ready to go.

I was surprised how much detail there was in the piece. As I paid more and more attention to the model, I found myself enjoying picking out the small elements from the to the skulls to the keys to the Skaven markings. I quickly became absorbed in the process, giving myself the distraction from the 101 things playing on my mind. This is what I paint for.

A few days of work (and another investment in paints), and I was pretty happy with how it turned out:

My youngest, though, suggested it was a bit dark. So, for the second chunk of ruined building, I used a thinned base coat of Pallid Wytch Flesh before I went to work with the Nuln Oil:

I’m feeling better about this one. With a bit of dry brushing, this started to feel like a better balance between the stone and the gold.

There’s a bit less fiddly detail on this one, although I’m having loads of fun with the warpstone censer hanging on the short edge:

A few more hours, and these will be done. And I’m looking forward to doing the last two bits.

Apparently, painting scenery is my new passion.
